Specifying Printing Options

What Are Printing Options?

Text strings appended to print commands when printing data on a network printer from a UNIX workstation or a computer are referred to as "printing options" in this manual.

Using printing options, you can specify the RTIFF Menu settings. The settings specified by printing options take priority over the RTIFF Menu settings specified on the control panel of the machine. However, the settings specified in printing options are valid only temporarily, and those settings are cleared and reset to those configured on the control panel, as soon as the output made by the print command is complete.

Note

  • You can specify printing options with the print command only when TCP/IP is used as the network protocol. For details about printing option specification commands, see Printing Option Specification Command (RTIFF).

  • When specifying certain printing options, the settings of the RTIFF Menu configured on the control panel of the machine may be applied in addition to the setting specified in the printing option.

How to Specify Printing Options

How to specify printing options differs depending on the command used for printing. When you want to use the "ftp" command for printing from a UNIX workstation, for instance, enter a space after the print command, and then enter printing options without any break.

For example, to switch to RTIFF, feed paper from Paper Input Location 1, set the print quantity to 3, and print an image in the center of the printable area, you would enter the command as follows:

ftp> put "tiff-filename",filetype=RTF,tray=1,copies=3,center

  • If you want to specify more than one printing option, use commas "," to separate each printing option.

  • Some printing options require a value to be specified with the option. In order to specify a value, enter an "=" after the printing option name, and then immediately enter the value without a break.

  • When specifying only one printing option that does not include "=", add a comma (,) before the printing option.

Note

  • For details about how to use the print commands, see "Device Monitoring" on our website.

  • If the operating system you are using does not allow the use of "=", use "_" (underscore).

  • The number of characters that can be used to specify printing options is limited to 1,023 bytes. However, it may be less depending on the environment, such as operating system, network environment and applications.

  • Data may not be printed properly if you specify an incorrect printing option or a value that is outside the specifiable range.
